DENIM FABRICS & WEIGHTS

Select the Right Denim for Your Product

Denim weight, composition, weave, dye and finishing affect structure, comfort, durability, shrinkage and wash response.

Denim Typical Weight Characteristics Recommended Application
Lightweight Denim 6–9 oz Soft, flexible and easier to drape. Shirts, dresses, skirts and lightweight shorts.
Midweight Denim 10–12 oz Balanced structure, comfort and durability. Everyday jeans, jackets, shorts and skirts.
Heavyweight Denim 13–16 oz Dense, structured and substantial hand feel. Premium jeans, baggy fits, jackets and workwear.
Rigid Denim Weight varies Non-stretch denim, commonly made from 100% cotton, with a structured appearance. Raw jeans, structured fits and heritage styles.
Stretch Denim Weight varies Denim blended with elastane or another stretch fibre for flexibility and recovery. Slim, skinny, fitted and comfort-focused jeans.
Selvedge Denim Typically 10–16 oz Shuttle-loom denim with a genuine finished self-edge. Premium raw jeans and heritage denim products.
Coloured Denim Weight varies Black, grey, brown, cream and collection-specific colour options. Fashion denim and coordinated collections.
Understanding denim weight

Ounces describe the approximate weight of one square yard of denim. A higher weight generally creates more structure, but weight alone does not determine quality. Yarn, weave, cotton quality, dyeing, finishing and shrinkage also matter.

TECHNICAL DENIM OPTIONS

Raw, Rigid, Selvedge and Sanforized Denim

Raw Denim

Denim that has not undergone a garment wash after production. It develops wear patterns and fading through use.

Rigid Denim

Non-stretch denim, commonly made from 100% cotton. Raw denim is generally rigid, but rigid denim is not always raw.

Selvedge Denim

Denim woven with a finished self-edge. Genuine selvedge is part of the fabric and should not be confused with decorative tape sewn onto a seam.

Sanforized Denim

Fabric mechanically pre-shrunk to reduce later dimensional change. Actual shrinkage should still be tested for the selected fabric and wash.

Unsanforized Denim

Denim that has not been mechanically pre-shrunk and can experience greater shrinkage after washing.

DENIM WASHING & FINISHING

Custom Denim Washes and Fade Effects

Wash development controls denim colour, contrast, softness, shrinkage and the final character of the garment.

01

Rinse Wash

Removes loose dye while retaining a clean, relatively dark denim appearance.

02

Enzyme Wash

Softens the surface and creates controlled fading with reduced abrasion.

03

Stone Wash

Produces a worn appearance and softer hand feel through controlled processing.

04

Acid or Mineral Effect

Creates irregular, high-contrast fading for statement denim.

05

Bleach Wash

Reduces colour to develop pale blue, grey or high-contrast effects.

06

Vintage Wash

Combines fading and finishing processes to create an aged appearance.

07

Black Wash

Clean black, faded black, charcoal and grey-black finishing options.

08

Overdye & Tint

Adds a secondary tone such as brown, green, grey or another fashion colour.

09

Resin & 3D Creases

Sets selected crease formations and three-dimensional wear effects.

10

Whiskers

Controlled wear lines developed around the front hip and upper thigh.

11

Hand Sanding

Targeted abrasion highlighting thighs, seams and selected areas.

12

Honeycombs

Crease-inspired fading developed behind the knee.

Wash variation: Denim washing creates controlled variation between garments. The approved sample establishes the target, but colour and fade patterns cannot be perfectly identical on every piece. An AI-generated reference may also contain effects that cannot be physically reproduced exactly.

Custom Denim Manufacturing FAQs

What is your MOQ for custom denim?

Our standard starting MOQ is 50 pieces per design. The possible colour and size breakdown depends on fabric, dyeing, washing, trims and decoration.

Can I order a denim sample first?

Yes. A paid sample is recommended to evaluate measurements, fit, fabric, wash, hardware, decoration and workmanship before bulk production.

Can you make 100% cotton rigid denim?

Can you make genuine selvedge jeans?

Genuine selvedge production depends on selvedge fabric availability, required weight, composition, colour and order quantity.
